Chapter Twelve

“It’s no lie!” Garret assured them vehemently. “Check my bank records. I send money to Roy every month, directly deposited into his account. But he’s supposed to give it to Willie, to say it’s part of her grandfather’s estate. I figured if you knew it came from me, you wouldn’t take it.”

“Oh, so you graciously wanted my dear old Uncle Roy to get the credit for taking care of us? You know, I might even believe you...if you and Uncle Roy had ever been friends, or if Uncle Roy had ever given us anything.”

He looked honestly confused. “He didn’t? But I’ve been sending him money the whole time I’ve been here. I made him promise to give it to you. I told him I knew you’d use it right, that you’d see Abby and Mac get what they need.”

Willie wasn’t ready to believe him. She knew her mother had caught him in plenty of lies. Abby and Mac may have been too young to remember much about their father, but Willie wasn’t. Why would she ever trust him now?

“Let’s take a step back,” Jake said, defusing the tension that had been growing in the room. “We can look into that later. I want to hear more about the people you were involved with, Garret. You said some kid was your contact?”

“Yeah. He showed up one day and said he’d heard I was looking for a way to make some cash. Well, I was, so I said okay. It went on from there.”

“He knew who you were?”

“And he knew I had a family to support. But I didn’t know him...at least, I don’t think so.”

“You never knew his name?”

“He went by some nickname, something like Mosey. I told the police about it back when they first picked me up, but I don’t think they ever found him. I don’t know if they even believed me that he existed.”

Willie glanced up at Jake. Surely if there was a drug dealer going by the name “Mosey” in Laurel County, law enforcement must’ve had a run-in with him over the years. But Jake shook his head; the name meant nothing to him. It was definitely a lead they’d have to look into.

“You left because you thought you were putting your family in some kind of danger,” Jake said. “Did this Mosey person make threats?”

“Vague threats. He knew I’d been dipping into the stash. He said the whole county knew, the bosses knew, and they wanted payback...or else. When my next envelope came, it didn’t have my cash. It had a bill for what I owed them.”

“And, of course, you couldn’t pay,” Willie said.

“I didn’t even know who to pay! Then Mosey showed up with my next job. The bosses demanded I go to Dallas and meet up with a group of other guys to break into a warehouse. None of us wanted to be there, but we all knew we couldn’t say no. They had me going back and forth to Dallas for a month.
