Chapter Twelve
âItâs no lie!â Garret assured them vehemently. âCheck my bank records. I send money to Roy every month, directly deposited into his account. But heâs supposed to give it to Willie, to say itâs part of her grandfatherâs estate. I figured if you knew it came from me, you wouldnât take it.â
âOh, so you graciously wanted my dear old Uncle Roy to get the credit for taking care of us? You know, I might even believe you...if you and Uncle Roy had ever been friends, or if Uncle Roy had ever given us anything.â
He looked honestly confused. âHe didnât? But Iâve been sending him money the whole time Iâve been here. I made him promise to give it to you. I told him I knew youâd use it right, that youâd see Abby and Mac get what they need.â
Willie wasnât ready to believe him. She knew her mother had caught him in plenty of lies. Abby and Mac may have been too young to remember much about their father, but Willie wasnât. Why would she ever trust him now?
âLetâs take a step back,â Jake said, defusing the tension that had been growing in the room. âWe can look into that later. I want to hear more about the people you were involved with, Garret. You said some kid was your contact?â
âYeah. He showed up one day and said heâd heard I was looking for a way to make some cash. Well, I was, so I said okay. It went on from there.â
âHe knew who you were?â
âAnd he knew I had a family to support. But I didnât know him...at least, I donât think so.â
âYou never knew his name?â
âHe went by some nickname, something like Mosey. I told the police about it back when they first picked me up, but I donât think they ever found him. I donât know if they even believed me that he existed.â
Willie glanced up at Jake. Surely if there was a drug dealer going by the name âMoseyâ in Laurel County, law enforcement mustâve had a run-in with him over the years. But Jake shook his head; the name meant nothing to him. It was definitely a lead theyâd have to look into.
âYou left because you thought you were putting your family in some kind of danger,â Jake said. âDid this Mosey person make threats?â
âVague threats. He knew Iâd been dipping into the stash. He said the whole county knew, the bosses knew, and they wanted payback...or else. When my next envelope came, it didnât have my cash. It had a bill for what I owed them.â
âAnd, of course, you couldnât pay,â Willie said.
âI didnât even know who to pay! Then Mosey showed up with my next job. The bosses demanded I go to Dallas and meet up with a group of other guys to break into a warehouse. None of us wanted to be there, but we all knew we couldnât say no. They had me going back and forth to Dallas for a month.
